The Project

Continuous Bypass Pumping In A Residential Street

Welltech was engaged to run a sewer bypass in East Perth while critical inspections were carried out on underground tanks. The system had to move up to 270 litres per second to a critical asset, 24 hours a day, for the duration of the works.
The complication was location. The pumps sat metres from homes, and overnight noise limits were a condition of the works going ahead. A bypass that has to stop pumping at 8pm isn’t a bypass.

The Solution

A BESS And Generator Hybrid Built Around The Noise Limit

Sizing a diesel generator for peak load and running it continuously fails a brief like this twice over. It’s loudest and least fuel-efficient exactly when the load is lightest, and it leaves the site on a single point of failure.
Blue Diamond changed the generator’s job. A BatteryBox battery energy storage system was paired with a right-sized generator and monitored through the ONE Intelligent Energy platform. The generator now runs in short blocks at high load to charge the battery, then shuts down. The battery carries the site the rest of the time.
Charge scheduling was then tuned around the constraint that mattered most, delivering a continuous 10-hour window from 8pm to 6am with the battery powering the entire site and the diesel generator completely switched off.

The Outcome

10 Generator-Free Hours Every Night And 2,300 Litres Of Diesel Saved Per Month

Generator runtime dropped by approximately two thirds, to just over 8 hours a day on a site that never stops. That’s 70 to 80 litres of diesel saved per day, around 2,200 to 2,400 litres per month, and more than 6 tonnes of CO2 avoided.
Service intervals extended from every 20 days to once every two months, and because the battery can carry the site while the generator is offline, servicing happens without shutting the pumps down or parking a standby generator on site for the life of the project.
Running two independent sources of supply also gave the project redundancy it didn’t have before.
