Temporary Site Power For Redevelopment Project In Inner City Melbourne

Construction company Hickory was in need of a solution to power the construction of their mixed-use development ‘The Walk’ at Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne. The Walk redevelopment will feature 450 hotel rooms, a public rooftop bar and retail spaces. 

Being in a high foot traffic area, finding a solution that delivered a reliable supply of power without excessive emissions or noise was a high priority for Hickory.

The Solution

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Blue Diamond Machinery provided Hickory with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Specially designed for the surging load behaviours of construction equipment, BESS were deployed on site to power 2x Alimaks and a truck lift.  

BESS draw power from the grid or a generator, charge the battery to 100% and store it for later use. When needed, they leverages power from the battery to provide a stable, reliable power output with a carbon footprint 70-90% lower than relying on diesel alone.  

This is just one of many applications of BESS on construction sites. 

The Outcome

Carbon Emissions Reduced By Over 15 Tonnes To Date

Hickory forecasts a saving of over 30,000L of diesel on the project since deploying BESS on site. This equates to a saving of approximately 15 tonnes of carbon emissions, demonstrating Hickory’s commitment to reducing environmental impact. 

BESS use lithium-ion battery technology which allows for seamless operation of equipment on site with fewer emissions and a noise output significantly lower than a diesel generator. This meant construction could continue throughout the day and night without disruptions to the surrounding area.
