The Project

Replacing Diesel Generators On A Concrete Batch Plant

Concrete batch plants in Australia are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from the CO2 released during cement production. In fact, the cement industry emitted approximately 4.7 million tonnes of CO2 in the 2020-2021 period alone.

To combat these emissions, Holcim approached Blue Diamond Machinery looking for an alternative way to power their off-grid site in Rooty Hill. The site required a solution that would comfortably manage the peak amps for startup and shutdown of cement production equipment.

The Solution

Battery Energy Storage Systems

Blue Diamond Machinery provided Holcim with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to replace diesel as the primary source of off-grid power. Using the BESS, the site was able transition from a 250kVA diesel generator running 24/7 with a smaller 100kVA generator cycle charging from the BESS.

BESS are specially designed to power high-peak load equipment like conveyer belts and dust extractors. The battery powers the equipment, and only calls on the backup generator to charge the unit when the battery depletes.

This is one of many examples of the potential applications of the Battery Energy Storage System in the construction industry.

The Outcome

Increased Site Efficiency & A Reduction In Generator Emissions & Diesel Consumption

The transition from 100% diesel reliance to a cycle charging system has led to remarkable results for Holcim.

The Battery Energy Storage System’s ability to deal with higher peak loads means the plant now runs a lot smoother as equipment is no longer short circuiting. Transitioning to a smaller generator only running a few hours a day also resulted in an immediate reduction in diesel consumption, CO2 emissions, generator noise and maintenance.

As we work towards a more sustainable future, it’s crucial to adopt low-emission technologies in our operations. If you’re looking to enhance sustainability in your next project, contact Blue Diamond Machinery today.
