Supplying Consistent, Reliable Power For An Urban Construction Project

M Squared Electrical was contracted to supply a reliable power source for Hacer’s ‘Assemble’ development in Kensington, Victoria. The site was facing issues with insignificant grid power to operate high-draw power equipment like hoists and concrete pumps. 

The Solution

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

M Squared Electrical chose a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), supplied by Blue Diamond Machinery, as a drop-in solution for all onsite power usage. This included powering 4 construction elevators, 5 concrete pumps, crane signage, hoists and site amenities.  

The BESS was paired with an 89kVA diesel generator to charge the battery when power hits below 20%. Acting as the primary source of power onsite, the BESS reduces generator runtime from 24/7 to just a few hours a day, eliminating the risk of generator underloading. It can power any type of heavy electrical equipment, but is particularly well-suited to powering high-power equipment with intermittent loads. 

The Outcome

A Reduction In Emissions & Over 30,000L Of Diesel Savings

Since deploying the BESS, the site has achieved considerable savings and operational reliability.  

Transitioning from diesel to a BESS, the site experienced a massive saving on generator fuel, saving roughly 30,000L of diesel. At $2 a litre, that’s approximately $60,000 of savings in the last 3 months alone. CO2 emissions have also decreased significantly, with these savings expected to grow as the site increases.
