Rob Carr were contracted to perform microtunnelling works for Sydney Water as part of a $90M upgrade to the North West Growth Area project. The project required a solution that could manage the significant yet varying power loads from tunnelling equipment while still maintaining efficiency. Â
The first tunnel was completed using 1250kVA worth of diesel generators running at full-noise and using a significant amount of fuel. Â
Blue Diamond Machinery supplied two synchronised Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a combined capacity of 900 kWh. This setup replaced 1250kVA worth of power from diesel generators with just 270kW of optimised cycle charging generators. Â
BESS draw energy from the grid or a generator, charge the battery to 100% and store it for later use. When needed, it leverages the stored power to provide a stable, reliable and low-emission power output. Â
To further reduce emissions, this setup can also integrate with the GEH2 hydrogen fuel cell generator, bringing us closer to net zero goals. Â
The transition from 100% diesel reliance to a cycle charging system led to remarkable results for the site.Â
By introducing battery power from the battery energy storage systems, the site reduced its generator footprint by nearly 1/10th while bettering equipment efficiency in the process. Using these battery powered units meant the project could efficiently meet off-grid base loads using cycle charging and the capacity to take on dynamic loads with the battery systems. This resulted in an immediate reduction in fuel consumption and onsite noise pollution.Â
